FARMERS may be allowed view meat plant scales, according to the Fine Gael agriculture and food spokesperson Denis Naughten TD.

He said he had been informed by Agriculture and Food Minister Mary Coughlan that she is to consider proposals under the €50 million meat processing development budget to provide facilities for farmers to view scales while their animals are being weighed.

“The issue of access has been brought to my attention by a number of farmers, some of whom have had worrying experiences when it came to the weights of their animals.
