THE decline in the poultry sector made it more difficult for consumers to buy Irish turkeys this Christmas.

It is estimated that almost 40% of the two million turkeys consumed over the holiday period were not Irish.

Fine Gael agriculture spokesperson Denis Naughten, TD, who revealed the figures, said that this is particularly disappointing given that Irish consumers have consistently shown a desire to buy Irish.
