THE only way to reduce prices for organic food in Ireland is to encourage more farmers to grow it.

Labour Party spokesperson on agriculture and food safety Dr Mary Upton made the suggestion after it emerged that Irish consumers pay some of the highest prices for organic food in the EU.

Yet, Irish farmers are less likely to switch to organic agriculture than farmers in almost every other European country, she said.
