EVERY second shopper believes the time is right to buy big ticket items such as cars as consumer sentiment hits a four-year high.

The overall IIB Bank ESRI Consumer Sentiment Index rose to 106.8 in January, up from 103.9 in December.

The increase, though modest, was sufficient to push the Consumer Sentiment index level to its highest level since January 2001.
