IRELAND needs to develop more active measures to increase funding for pensions and research and development according to the European Commission’s assessment of its National Reform Programme.

EU governments were urged to move their reforms up a gear by Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, to increase wealth and jobs in their sluggish economies.

He identified four priority areas for EU governments to commit to: investment in education, research and innovation; freeing up SMEs; employment policies to increase numbers at work; secure and sustainable energy supply.
