THE London market ended the week on a downbeat note yesterday as bluechip shares dipped below the 4000 barrier.

A tentatively upbeat start on Wall Street failed to lift trading and the FTSE 100 Index closed 42.7 points adrift at 3997.0.

US markets were subdued after uninspiring economic updates and the Dow Jones Industrial Average was only 30 points ahead by London’s close.
