The European Commission asked European governments to approve for 10 years the sale of foods made from a type of genetically modified corn produced by Monsanto.

The corn type, known as NK603, “has undergone a thorough safety assessment for any adverse impact on public health on the basis of international guidelines,” said the commission.

European environment ministers meeting on Monday will have three months to decide whether to approve the commission’s proposal. In April they blocked the sale of foods made from the corn type because of safety concerns.
