The chief executive of the national grid has retired after 34 years with the ESB.

Kieran O’Brien has been running the transmission service for 11 years and will step down at the end of the year.

The Kerryman has held various posts with the ESB and helped set up Eirgrid, which will take over the running of the national grid. An open competition to find a successor will begin soon.
