Newspaper advertising revenue up by 15%

NEWSPAPER advertising sales hit €331 million in 2005, an increase of 15% over 2004.

Newspaper advertising revenue up by 15%

The increase was fuelled by advertising agencies who increased their spend on newspaper advertising by more than 19%.

The increase arguably came as no surprise as National Newspapers of Ireland (NNI) the representative body for Ireland's main newspaper publishers actively targeted the advertising community with initiatives designed to promote the print industry as an effective marketing medium.

Commenting on the development, Aidan Forde, head of advertising at The Irish Examiner, said: "The spend in newspaper advertising in 2005 reflects the strength of this particular type of media. It re-enforces the fact that press advertising as a medium facilitates the provision of information in a more comprehensive way than other types of media."

Mr Forde said newspapers give advertisers tremendous flexibility in shape, size, position and colour, and, as an advertising medium, allows fast, easy access when time is short or changes are urgent.

"Newspapers in general, and The Irish Examiner in particular, are very much a chosen vehicle for many advertisers to reach their target market and we would like to thank all our advertisers for their commitment to our publications."

The NNI also issued its league table of advertising agencies yesterday. Aegis Media topped the list with an overall spend on newspaper-based advertising in 2005 of €21.7m.

Mindshare/Mediacom/MEC (Group M) came a close second in the list with a total spend of €20.2m for 2005, whilst Brindley Advertising retained 3rd position with a spend of just over €14m.
