US economy expands 4.2%

The US economy expanded at a 4.2% annual rate in the first quarter, led by consumer spending and business investment in equipment and software.

The rise in gross domestic product, the value of all goods and services produced, followed a 4.1% pace in the fourth quarter, the Commerce Department said in Washington.
