PERMANENT TSB said it would face larger problems down the line if it did not raise interest rates charged to 80,000 mortgage holders.

The bank confirmed its decision to increase rates on standard variable rate mortgages by half a percent yesterday.

The move will mean an extra €57.29 per month on a €200,000 mortgage.
