THE claim that by the end of 2010 NAMA will give a return of €4.8 billion to the taxpayer will be scoffed at by sceptics and by those implacably opposed to the bad bank principle.

New research shows nearly half the country is opposed to NAMA, believing it will harm the recovery of the economy. Men are more sceptical, with 46% saying it will not help in the current crisis, while a smaller but sizeable 40% of women share this view.

Standard Life found Dublin and the rest of Leinster were the most positively disposed to the bad bank, with 31% supporting its implementation.
