Man seriously injured in altercation in Cork town

Gardaí have launched an investigation after a man suffered serious head injuries following an altercation in a Cork town over the weekend.

A senior garda said officers have harvested and viewed CCTV footage from a premises in the centre of Carrigaline following the incident on Friday night.

But he said detectives are waiting for an improvement in the injured party’s medical condition before speaking to him.

He appealed to anyone who was in or around the scene of the incident outside a Chinese restaurant and takeaway off Carrigaline’s main street to come forward sooner rather than later.

It is understood that there was a group of people standing outside the premises at around 10.15pm on Friday when the injured party, 54, and from the Carrigaline area, walked passed.

It’s believed that words were exchanged between the man and at least one individual in the group before an altercation occurred between the victim and another man. The victim suffered serious head injuries arising out of the incident.

An ambulance was called and the man was taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment for what was a suspected fractured skull and bleeding into the brain.

Given the nature of the injuries, the first few hours were critical but it is understood that the injuries are now considered to be not life threatening.

The senior garda said CCTV footage has been very helpful in the investigation to date but he said a statement from the injured party will be required before they can determine the course of the investigation.

Pending a medical decision on whether the victim is ready for interview, he said detectives will continue to gather as much evidence as they can in relation to the incident.

In the meantime, he encouraged anyone who was outside the takeaway at the time, or who can assist gardaí in their investigation, to contact Togher Garda Station on 021-4947120.
