Stanislav Shushkevich, post-Soviet leader of Belarus, dies at 87

Stanislav Shushkevich, who steered Belarus to independence during the break-up of the Soviet Union and served as its first leader, has died aged 87.

He died early on Wednesday, according to his wife Irina.
