Covid-19 cases recorded in a single day in the UK have risen above 40,000 for the first time, as Public Health England (PHE) warned “hospitals are at their most vulnerable”.

The British Government said that, as of 9am on Monday, there had been a further 41,385 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK, while a further 357 people have died within 28 days of testing positive.
