Police in England have released CCTV footage of a "savage" attack on a homeless man which left him with possible life-changing injuries.

The assailant felled the 58-year-old victim with a swinging blow to the head with a crutch and then kicked and stamped on him.

The incident in Manchester city centre took place when the offender became involved in an argument with the homeless man.

Footage of the altercation in Market Street near Tesco at about 6.30am on Saturday also saw the offender swing the crutch at a passer-by who apparently attempted to intervene.

Detective Constable Paul Wilde, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "This was a savage attack on a vulnerable man that has left him with possible life-changing injuries.

"This happened in the early hours of the morning in the city centre when people would have been going to work and seen something.

"I would urge anyone who was in the area at the time or saw anything that can help our investigation to contact us."

Anyone with information should call police in England on 101, quoting incident number 558 of 15/10/16, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
