Clinton and Trump celebrate critical victories in the White House race

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are celebrating critical victories after primaries in five states that have tightened their hold on the 2016 White House race.

Florida Senator Marco Rubio dropped out of the Republican contest after a landslide defeat in his home state to Mr Trump.

Republican contender John Kasich won the race in Ohio where he is governor.

On the Democratic side, former Secretary of State Mrs Clinton notched up projected wins in the sunshine state, Ohio, Illinois and North Carolina: “If we work together, if we go forward in this campaign, if we win in November, I know our future will be brighter.

“Thank you all so very much.”
