Newlyweds' big day survives floods in England

A bride who worried that her wedding was in jeopardy of being washed-out due to rising flood waters has managed to tie the knot in England.

Lucy and Peter Nickson emerged from Selby Abbey on Monday just 100m (328ft) from where local people stood watching the River Ouse raging just inches under closed bridges in the North Yorkshire town.

Mrs Nickson said she had a sleepless night watching flood reports and worrying whether her guests would find their way to the church.

But there was a full turnout for the service, which included the hymn Shine Jesus Shine and its line: "Flow, river, flow. Flood the nations with grace and mercy."

Mrs Nickson said: "It was pretty stressful, certainly from last night when the river was getting really high in Selby. I was up all night on my phone checking the Environment Agency's website.

"We thought it may flood but, luckily, we got the news at about four in the morning."

The new Mrs Nickson added: "My lovely husband decided to call me at nine o'clock last night and tell me that Selby's flooded. So I was a little bit panicked last night.

"We had a different way to get here but, other than that, all our guests have managed to make it."

Mrs Nickson added: "It was not quite the night I expected. It's been a whirlwind but I've loved it."

The couple's worries escalated last night when the wedding photographer found he had water lapping at his doorstep.

But they said it could have been much worse, as a couple of venues that they looked at for the wedding are currently completely underwater.

Water levels on the River Ouse running through Selby began to drop on Monday but a number of roads in the area remain closed.
