Engineer missing after Canadian train derailment

An engineer is missing after a train plunged into a river after derailing on Quebec’s North Shore, a Canadian iron ore manufacturer has said.

The Iron Ore Company said the engineer was the only person on board the freight train which was transporting empty cars. The train’s locomotive is partially submerged in the Moisie River.

The firm said preliminary information suggested a landslide caused the derailment.

Quebec provincial police spokesman Claude Doiron said the accident happened near Sept-Iles, about 559 miles (900km) from Montreal.

The freight train was being operated by the Quebec North Shore and Labrador Railway.
