American fraudster Bernie Madoff commanded respect from staff and was “ironically” anxious that his “prestige and reputation” should be protected, a High Court judge in London said today.

Mr Justice Popplewell said the businessman was not a “tyrannical bully” and had been fond of saying “it’s my bat and ball” and “it’s my name on the door”.
