French media report that workers were repairing a fuel tank on-site at the time of the explosion. A medical outpost was established on rue d'Enghien.
In a brief statement at approximately 5pm Irish time, the Mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoë, said two workers had died and others were still buried under the rubble.
"The circumstances of this tragedy are not yet determined and the investigation will shed light on this terrible accident," he said.
