Prison cells painted pink 'to inspire calm'

A prison's cells have been painted pink in an attempt to calm inmates.

Bosses made the decision to redecorate 30 cells at Maricopa County Jail, Switzerland, and give the prisoners pink uniforms to wear as part of a project called Cool Down Pink, and psychologist Daniela Spath believes the initiative is having a positive effect.

She said: "Anger levels can reduce in as little as 15 minutes, though we usually confine a convict to a pink cell for two hours."

However, some prisoners have blasted the scheme for being "humiliating" and say the cells look like "a little girl's bedroom".
