People unaware that tigers are almost extinct with just 3,000 in wild

New research in the UK suggests people do not know just how endangered tigers are, with just over 3,000 remaining in the wild.

A survey has found that people in the UK think there are around 17,000 remaining.

Irish television presenter Liz Bonnin, who now works for BBC as a wildlife and science presenter, is fronting the campaign for "the plight of the tiger".

"Numbers have been worryingly low for quite a long time," she warned.

"It's about awareness and education, and maybe us, as a global population, focusing on other things.

"They're literally on the brink of extinction now."
