Police in Istanbul used water cannon to disperse thousands of people who returned to the city’s central square for a memorial to those killed in nearly three weeks of anti-government protests.

The demonstrators converged at the square, laying carnations and shouting anti-government slogans, in remembrance of three protesters and a police officer killed in the protests.
