New attacks on Pakistan polio teams

Gunmen have staged more attacks on UN-backed polio vaccination teams in Pakistan, wounding one worker, an official said.

The attacks come a day after five female polio workers were killed in southern and north-west Pakistan.

Taliban spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan said the group carried out the attacks on Tuesday.

Pakistan is one of only three countries where polio is endemic.

Janbaz Afridi, a senior health official, said the latest attacks took place in Peshawar, Charsadda and Nowshera.

One polio worker was wounded in the head and is in a critical condition.

Militants accuse health workers of acting as spies for the US and claim the vaccine makes children sterile.

The Taliban in the north-west tribal region also blame the US drone strikes for their opposition to the vaccinations.
