A British pub landlord has been accused of being a vampire in the Philippines.

John Teagle has been trying to clear his name for five years after his Filipino wife Elsa's aunt made the shocking claims in 2007 after he refused to lend her money.

The 68-year-old man was accused of sucking children's blood in the village of Argawanon on Cebu Island, which he has always denied, and the rumours were eventually reported by a regional radio station.

But the town's Barrio Captain, a form of political representative, reprimanded everyone who made the claims and declared them nonsense.

Teagle told the Kent and Sussex Courier: "They were severely reprimanded but it still left a very bad taste. The deed was done. It's gone away a lot now, but it's not dead.

"In the Philippines there are still a lot of superstitious beliefs and lots of fears about things which cannot be seen."
