Austrian police seize 9.5 tons of garlic

Austrian police have seized 9.5 tons of stolen garlic.

The officials discovered the huge haul when they pulled over five Romanians in three lorries on a motorway near the Hungarian border.

The men – who were aged from 25 to 37 – did not say where the garlic, which was valued at £23,967, had come from.

They were charged with transporting stolen goods and an 80% excess load.

A police officer said: "For that amount of garlic, the men would have needed nine small lorries, not three."
