One hurt after Queen sign row

One person has been injured during disturbances linked to the Queen’s visit to Northern Ireland.

Republicans had erected an Irish flag and a sign which said “Eriu is our Queen” on Black Mountain in West Belfast.

A confrontation is believed to have ensued over the sign. Eriu is a goddess in Irish mythology.

A Police Service of Northern Ireland spokeswoman said: “Police are investigating reports of a spontaneous disturbance on Black Mountain at approx 6pm this evening. One person has been injured and has been taken to hospital.”

The injuries are not life-threatening.

Earlier today police confirmed that they were aware of various items having been erected on Black Mountain. There were no offences but police are continuing to monitor the situation.
