14 killed in Iraq market blasts

Fourteen people have been killed and more than 100 wounded in a double bombing at a busy market in a Shiite neighbourhood of Baghdad.

The two bombs tore through the market at midmorning while people were shopping before the heat of the day, said police.

They said 106 were wounded.

At least 125 Iraqis have been killed over the last two weeks in bombings and shootings that have mostly targeted Shiite Muslims and government security forces. It has been one of the deadliest periods since the last American troops withdrew six months ago.

Earlier today, gunmen opened fire on a police checkpoint in western Baghdad, killing three officers.
