Germans 'should be allowed to vote on further aid'

A German politician says his country should have a referendum on any further financial aid to debt-ridden eurozone countries.

Horst Seehoffer is the head of Bavaria's CSU, the sister party of Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats.

He pointed to Ireland's Fiscal Treaty referendum as proof that people can vote responsibly on European matters.

He said if the extent of Germany's financial commitment is widened, the German public should be consulted.
