Hollande and Merkel: EU will be there for Greece

The new President of France has said it is the duty of the EU to ensure that Greece remains in the Euro zone.

Speaking in Berlin tonight Francois Hollande said the people of Greece need to know that the EU will help to pull their country out of recession.

It comes as a third day of attempts to form a government in Greece collapsed today.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Hollande held talks about the European crisis in Berlin tonight.

Speaking at a press conference following those talks, President Hollande said the EU will pull Greece through the recession:

"We should and would like to and need to speak with the people of Greece and tell them that we need to and will be supporting various activates to support growth for Greece so that we can pull Greece through the recession, we are obligated to do this" he said.

Meanwhile German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the EU will be there for Greece as long as it is part of the EU:

"In various telephone calls with politicians of Greece and the Prime Minister trying to help them towards growth", she said.

"Also on an organisational level we are very much happy to be there for them and this is of course also as part of the European Union why we would be there for them".
