Unarmed observers to be deployed amid breaches of ceasefire
Just 24 hours after a ceasefire came into effect in Syria, the United Nations Security Council is discussing how best to deploy unarmed observers to monitor the implementation of an international peace plan.
The UN Arab League Special Envoy Kofi Annan last night told the 15 nation council that despite encouraging reports from Syria, the Government had not yet fully complied with the terms of the six point plan.
He urged the Security Council to demand the withdrawal of troops and heavy weapons from towns.
Activists say at least 15 people were killed yesterday in breaches of the ceasefire.
