Mexico shaken by 5.2 aftershock

Central Mexico has been rattled by a moderate 5.2-magnitude aftershock, following a 7.4 earthquake earlier in the week.

The US Geological Survey said the aftershock was centred in southern Guerrero state, along the border with neighbouring Oaxaca, the same area where Tuesday’s quake was centred.

USGS geophysicist Paul Caruso said aftershocks may occur weeks, months or even years after a large quake like Tuesday’s.

Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard wrote in his Twitter account that no major damage had been reported from the aftershock.

But some office workers did briefly evacuate from buildings in the centre of Mexico City.
