At least 14 people have been killed in avalanches caused by heavy snow in a mountainous region of north-eastern Afghanistan, officials said today.

Rescue crews were trying to reach remote areas of Badakhshan province where a number of houses were reported to have been destroyed yesterday, said deputy provincial governor Shams ul-Rahman.
