Dozens homeless after five-alarm fire in San Fran flats
Up to 60 people were left homeless after fire tore through their San Francisco apartment building.
Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White said the fire that engulfed three buildings raged for about three hours yesterday before it was brought under control.
The blaze sent one firefighter to the hospital with a neck burn and another was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. A civilian was also taken to hospital after inhaling smoke.
Ms Hayes-White said the fire started in one of the neighbourhood’s trademark three-storey Victorian homes and spread to a nearby apartment building and a single-family home. A total of 32 homes were destroyed.
At the fire’s peak, about 150 firefighters were on the scene – about half the city’s daytime force.
