Security forces 'fire on miners' in Indonesia

Indonesian security forces have opened fire on striking workers at Freeport-McMoran’s gold and copper mine, killing one and critically wounding another, according to a union leader.

Police said it was too early to comment and Freeport officials were preparing an official statement.

Workers at the Grasberg mine in easternmost Papau province began a strike on September 15, demanding pay increases from the current 2.10-3.50 dollars an hour to 17.50-43 dollars.

About 90% of the mine’s 12,000 employees are taking part.

Union leader Manuel Maniambo said the shooting occurred this morning as striking workers headed to the mine to try to stop replacement workers.

One worker was killed and the other was hospitalised in a critical condition.
