At least 17 people have died in fighting at a government compound in southern Afghanistan where three suicide attackers blew up vehicles, officials say.

The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the trio of attacks on the governor’s house, police headquarters and a third office used by a private security company official in Tarin Kot, the capital of Uruzgan province.

Dr Khan Agha Miakhail, the director of the hospital in Tarin Kot, said those killed included 10 children, one policeman, two women and three men.

He says 37 others have been injured in the fighting, which continues.
