A Scottish university is set to run a course about comic book characters.

Dundee University will teach postgraduate students about how the adventures of Desperate Dan, Oor Wullie and The Bash Street Kids relate to society and history.

Dr Chris Murray, whose idea it was to run the course, said the characters show what society was like in the past.

He told the Daily Record: "The Broons and Oor Wullie are good examples of how comics represent society at a point in time.

"Both reflected life in the tenements, a sense of community and post-industrial Scotland.

"And when The Dandy and The Beano were first published in the 1920s and 30s, they blew everything else off the shelves."

Students will also have the opportunity to gain work experience at DC Thomson - known as the home of British comics - in Dundee.
