Northern Japan has been hit by an earthquake, not far from the damaged Fukushima nuclear plant.

Northern Japan has been hit by an earthquake, not far from the damaged Fukushima nuclear plant.

First reports give it a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale.

There are no immediate reports of damage and no tsunami threat.

Earlier, engineers at Fukushima managed to put in a new power cable, in the hope of restarting the cooling system.
