An American man is attempting to live on beer during Lent.

While most settle for giving up their favourite snack for the Christian period of abstinence, J Wilson says he will consume nothing but the alcoholic beverage and water for the whole 46 days.

He plans to drink four of his own home-brewed beers a day, recreating the lives of 17th century German monks who would brew heavy "liquid bread" ale to get them through the period.

The newspaper editor said: "I did a 36-hour test drive about a week ago, and I don't think four beers is going to be a problem.

"But I don't know what will happen after days of not eating at all. That's one of the questions I am looking to answer."
