A magnitude-5.7 earthquake has shaken Mexico’s Gulf coast. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The US Geological Survey said the quake at 7:07 am local time was centred near the town of Acayucan in Veracruz state, and it was felt even in Mexico City, nearly 300 miles to the north-west.

It was relatively deep, about 83 miles below the surface and was felt across a wide portion of south-eastern Mexico.

Veracruz state Civil Protection spokeswoman Nohemi Guzman Lagunes said authorities were checking bridges and buildings for structural damage.
