Search for victims after cliffs crumble

A section of cliffs fell into the sea in the UK today, sparking a search for possible trapped victims, police said.

The landslide at St Margaret’s Bay, between Dover and Deal, Kent, happened at about 1pm.

Police used rescue dogs and specialist equipment to ensure no-one had been trapped.

A Kent Police spokesman said: “It is estimated that several tonnes of rocks and boulders have broken away and crashed on to the area below, near the Coastguard restaurant.

“Officers are speaking to witnesses and searches are being made in the area using rescue dogs, a thermal imaging camera and listening equipment to ensure that no-one out walking has been injured or trapped by the rock fall.

“Police are also warning walkers and visitors to stay away from this particular cliff area as this is the second rock fall in the last week.”
