North Korea backs down from drills threat

North Korea backed off from its threats to retaliate against South Korea for military drills and reportedly offered concessions on its nuclear programme.

The move was seen as a sign that that the communist North was seeking to lower the temperature on the Korean peninsula after weeks of soaring tensions, but Pyongyang has feinted towards conciliation before and failed to follow through.
