The controversial French bill raising the minimum retirement age to 62 was formally approved by the country’s constitutional court today, opening the way for President Nicolas Sarkozy to make it law.

The Constitutional Council reviewed the measure that led to weeks of strikes and street demonstrations around France and said that it fully conforms to the nation’s constitution.
