Bus 'may have dragged student for a mile'

A bus driver was arrested after a Cambridge University student died in a suspected hit-and-run, Transport for London said tonight.

Medical student Mingwei Tan was found lying in the road with fatal injuries in Haverstock Hill, north London, early on Thursday morning.

It is believed she may have been dragged for up to a mile by the bus.

Tributes were paid tonight by staff at the Cambridge college where the 20 year old, from Singapore, was studying.

Police believe Miss Tan, who was living in north London, was hit by the bus outside the Royal Free Hospital in Pond Street, about a mile away from where her body was found.

The bus then turned left into Haverstock Hill, travelling south, past Belsize Park Tube station.

Several personal items, including a purse and mobile phone, as well as blood, were found by investigators outside the station.

Her body was found near the junction with Downside Crescent, a short distance from the station.

A 50-year-old bus driver was arrested by the Met police’s Road Death Investigation Unit on Friday in connection with the crash.

He was bailed today pending further inquiries.

A post-mortem examination carried out yesterday revealed that Miss Tan died of multiple injuries.

An inquest into her death will be opened and adjourned at St Pancras Coroner’s court on Monday.
