A viral infection probably caused the stomach upset that sent former US president Jimmy Carter to hospital after a flight from Atlanta, Georgia, doctors said.

Mr Carter, 85, who was spending a second night in the hospital, was recovering and the viral infection was clearing up, MetroHealth Medical Centre in Cleveland, Ohio, said.
