UN chief urges Iran to comply with nuclear demands

Iran was urged by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today to co-operate with the nuclear watchdog agency.

He said Tehran must comply with UN resolutions and demanded that it suspend uranium enrichment and answer all questions about its nuclear programme.

The UN chief expressed concern at the latest report by Yukiya Amano, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, which said Iran continued to enrich uranium in defiance of five Security Council resolutions and was only selectively co-operating with UN inspectors.

Ban told a news conference he would have an opportunity of meeting Iranian authorities during next week’s ministerial session of the General Assembly, perhaps including President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who has requested a meeting.
