Early election results show President Paul Kagame is heading for a landslide victory, the chairman of Rwanda’s electoral commission said today.

Chrysologue Karangwa said Mr Kagame is poised to win more than 90% of the votes cast.

Long lines of voters turned out in the tiny central African nation yesterday.

Analysts said Mr Kagame faced no real competition. Some opposition parties were barred from participating, and the pre-election period was marred by crackdowns on opposition figures and media.

Mr Kagame has overseen years of economic and social development since the country’s 1994 genocide, when at least half a million people were slaughtered.

He will serve another seven-year term.
