Early election results show President Paul Kagame is heading for a landslide victory, the chairman of Rwanda’s electoral commission said today.

Nine years after Hutu extremists tried to wipe out minority Tutsis, Rwandans have voted overwhelmingly for a Tutsi president, with 95.05% casting ballots for incumbent Paul Kagame in the country’s first real presidential election, the electoral commission said.

INCUMBENT President Paul Kagame told the world yesterday that genocide-scarred Rwanda is “on the right path”, after he scored an overwhelming election win seen as confirming support for his efforts to heal the African nation’s wounds.q

Paul Kagame took a decisive lead early today in Rwanda’s first serious presidential elections, capturing more than 94% of the vote with half the districts reporting, elections officials said.

Rwandans were voting today in their first presidential election since about 800,000 people were slaughtered in the 1994 genocide.
