Aviation officials sparked a false alarm after reporting an airliner accident in Zimbabwe today but failing to say they were only carrying out a practice exercise.

They told journalists a Boeing 767 arriving from London was involved in an accident at Harare’s airport. The “incident” then received worldwide coverage.
